A wageslave is someone who is dependent on wage labor for their survival. Pretty much almost everyone in developed countries unless you are rich, win the lottery, or get lucky and get state benefits. A wage slave may also have some type of debt such as student loans or have to obey their boss so that they can feed their family. Unlike a feudal farmer who mainly worked during harvest seasons and then chilled the entire year, work is something that happens all year long thanks to technological advancements and capitalism. Ancient philosphers like Aristotle have stated that leisure is what makes someone grow and work is a means to survival. In places like America, if you are not a workaholic, you will be looked down upon due to American culture placing work as a virtue. This is despite how much of the work that people do nowadays is more impersonal and more systematic compared to 1000 years ago when harvesting crops would directly benefit you and your community. With a modern wageslave, they may work as a senior programmer at some credit union where they create scripts and programs in PowerOn, SQL, C#, Javascript, or html that help maintain banking systems and transactions. This may benefit with keeping banking systems stable and reliable, but has less of an impact over your own community. Someone may slave away trying to debug programs for some ancient database which may prevent them from doing something more meaningful such as creating programs that benefit all living beings than just for the company that they work at. This has caused people to also live more sedentary lifestyles where all they do is stare at a screen which can cause health issues.
